PROTECT print 8x10
This is a digital reproduction of an original illustration I did using graphite and watercolor pencils. Printed on crisp, firm 100 lb card stock measuring approximately 8”x10". All prints are packaged with a clear plastic sheath and a thick mat board backing for protection.
This is an image from the project for the 2021 Calendar: Practicing a World Beyond White Supremacy Culture
I created the artwork for this calendar with the intention to explore and practice antidotes that Tema Okun writes about in “Characteristics of White Supremacy Culture”

Unlearning quantity over quality.
Is there any part of your identity that feels measured by your productivity? Do you have parts of your life where you feel like you are always trying to catch up? To make more, to do enough? In the natural world, all growth is not visible. Some important work and transformation is invisible or happens deep underground. Think of germination and incubation. Some things must be protected while they develop with no measurable output whatsoever. There is a phrase “You have to inhale in order to exhale.” Meaning that you must pay attention to the world around you and be nourished (inhale) in order to create something (exhale). It is not feasible to produce in a long term way without first taking in the breath, the life force. Capitalism celebrates an increase in sellable goods only and does not have any terms of measurement for the inherent value of living beings, relationships or ecosystems. How does that affect our ability to care for ourselves and our loved ones?
